Applying for a South African passport for a minor child whilst one parent lives abroad
I trolled the internet trying t o find answer and I couldn't find it anywhere. I thought I would write this article to help any parent out there trying to apply by themselves for a South African child passport, whilst having the other parent living abroad.
The first thing to do: the parent living abroad could get touch with the South African Embassy. They will need to make an appointment, a separate one for every child.
The parent that is applying in South Africa should go to https://ehome.dha.gov.za and register themselves an account, I tried to register my son the first time and it wouldn't let me.
Create a new application, you will need both parents ID copies to attach to the application and the minor child's unabridged birth certificate. You will need to take copies of these for your appointment. When you have finished your application you should go to Booking appointment at a Department of Home Affairs branch This time enter your child's ID number. This will allow you to book an appointment with your local Home Affairs. Drive to the offices that you are going to apply at and speak to the supervisor and ask them for their email address. Send this email address to the parent that is living abroad.
The parent living abroad will fill in and sign the B1-73 form B1-73 form at the Embassy. The embassy will sign and stamp the form. They will email it to the email address that you were given by the supervisor of the Home Affairs branch that you are going applying at. Ask the Embassy to cc you into the email. The parent living abroad should also fill out the parent consent affidavit, at the Embassy, at the same time, they will send the affidavit with the other documents.
One the day of your appointment see the supervisor first and confirm that they have received the email from the Embassy.
NB. The Embassy visit needs to happen first.
When the supervisor confirms that they have received the forms, you are good to go.
They will scan the Embassy forms and add them to your application.
Hope this helps.
